111 tonnes of Kashmir cherry dispatched nationwide through rail network
The efforts of Northern Railway, Jammu Division, to deliver Jammu & Kashmir’s world-famous cherry to consumers across the country quickly and safely are yielding results. In this season so far, more than 111 tons of cherry has been successfully transported to different parts of the country through SLR/VP-based rail transport from Jammu and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra.
With the objective of ensuring better prices for farmers and orchardists and reducing transportation costs, Jammu Division is providing special rail rakes. For perishable products like cherry, SLR and VP coaches are being used, which ensures safe delivery in less time. Booking, loading and cold chain facilities are being provided by Railways at Jammu and Katra railway stations, so that farmers face no inconvenience.
Regarding this initiative, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, Jammu, Uchit Singhal said, “Connecting Jammu & Kashmir’s cherry to the national market is a priority for Jammu Division. Transport of more than 111 tons of cherry by rail is proof that farmers are placing their trust in Railways. SLR/VP-based transport is not only saving time but also increasing farmers’ income. Jammu Division will continue to provide special facilities and quick booking arrangements for horticulture produce in the future as well, so that the resolve of ‘Farm to Market’ can be realized.”
Jammu Division appeals to farmers to avail maximum benefit of this Railway facility for transportation of cherry and other perishable agricultural products.
