2 female leopards killed in Udhampur district, FIR registered

Two female leopards were brutally poached by snare’s strangulation in village Balandh of Tehsil Ramnagar and an FIR under the relevant sections of Wildlife Protection Act,1972 has been lodged with the police.

On the intervening night of 17-03-2024, a specific information regarding poaching of 02 leopardesses, (scheduled 1 wild fauna) using improvised snares of clutch wires in village Balandh of Ramnagar Tehsil was received by Department of Wild life Protection, Udhampur .Acting swiftly, a team led by Wildlife Warden Jammu Vijay Kumar,SFS and Range Officer Wildlife Range Udhampur Rakesh Sharma immediately rushed to spot after conveying the matter to Distt. Administration and Police authority . On reaching the spot, one female leopard was found brutally killed using locally improvised clutch wires snare and another one severely injured by getting entangled in snare within an agricultural field. Wildlife team, after putting strenuous efforts, succeeded in freeing the wild beast and endeavoured to shift the same for treatment, but the badly injured leopardess succumbed enroute thereby taking the toll of illegal killing to two nos.

The carcasses of both the scheduled 1 wild beasts were taken possession of by the Department of Wild life Protection and an FIR stood lodged against unknown person (s) in Ramnagar Police Station under relevant sections of Wildlife Protection Act,1972, beside initiating inquest proceeding in the heinous Wildlife crime.

Final disposal of both the carcasses shall be carried out as per extant statutory guidelines by way of complete incineration, sources added.
