Srinagar :- A biting cold wave has engulfed the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, with temperatures plummeting to freezing levels, disrupting normal life. Shopian in Kashmir Valley emerged as the coldest place at -8.1°C, followed by Anantnag and Kulgam.
Iconic tourist destinations like Gulmarg and Pahalgam also recorded sub-zero temperatures. Srinagar experienced -4.6°C, while Sonamarg saw -7.0°C. In Jammu, Padder recorded -5.7°C, while Banihal saw -1.3°C. Jammu city was relatively warmer at 6.5°C. Ladakh witnessed the most frigid conditions, with Kargil recording -8.8°C and Leh at -7.4°C.The severe cold wave has led to widespread challenges, including frozen water pipelines, power outages, and transportation disruptions. In the Valley, agricultural activities have halted, and the Dal Lake has started to freeze.
The harsh conditions have increased demand for heating appliances and warm clothing. Tourists are flocking to snow-covered destinations but are advised to exercise caution. The Meteorological Department has predicted the cold wave to persist, with no significant rise in temperatures expected in the coming days.
