Flowers, idols not in Tawi anymore: JMC sets up dedicated immersion points
Reaffirming its commitment to protecting the Suryaputri Tawi and promoting sustainable urban development, the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) today launched two significant eco-friendly initiatives at the Tawi Riverfront—dedicated immersion receptacles for religious offerings and a Net Zero Cooling Station powered entirely by solar energy.
The initiatives were inaugurated by JMC Commissioner Dr. Devansh Yadav in the presence of Mahants and religious heads, besides officers and representatives of the Jammu Municipal Corporation.
As part of its continued efforts to keep the Tawi River clean and preserve its religious and cultural sanctity, JMC has installed dedicated immersion receptacles at the Tawi Bridge.
The facility has been created to provide devotees with a convenient and responsible alternative for disposing of flowers, idols and other worship materials, thereby preventing such material from being thrown directly into the river.
The Suryaputri Tawi, revered as the “Daughter of the Sun,” holds immense religious and cultural significance for the people of Jammu. The initiative seeks to ensure that religious practices are carried out in an environmentally responsible manner, maintaining both the sanctity of traditions and the cleanliness of the river.
The presence and support of Mahants and religious heads on the occasion further highlighted the importance of collective participation in safeguarding the Tawi and encouraging citizens to adopt responsible waste-disposal practices.
Dr. Devansh Yadav appealed to devotees and citizens to make use of the designated immersion receptacles and avoid disposing of religious materials directly into the river. He emphasized that protecting the Tawi is a shared responsibility and requires active participation from the community.
In another innovative step towards creating a sustainable and visitor-friendly riverfront, JMC has developed a ‘Net Zero Cooling Station’ at the Tawi Riverfront.
The specially designed room provides a cool and comfortable space for visitors seeking relief from the intense summer heat. Significantly, the facility operates entirely on solar power, with its lighting and cooling systems powered by electricity generated through the installed solar setup.
The initiative demonstrates how renewable energy can be integrated into public facilities to provide essential visitor amenities while minimizing dependence on conventional sources of electricity.
Dr. Devansh Yadav inaugurated the Net Zero Cooling Station today and highlighted the importance of adopting innovative, energy-efficient and environmentally sustainable solutions in public spaces.
The facility is expected to provide particular relief to senior citizens, families, children and other visitors spending time at the Tawi Riverfront during the summer months.
The two initiatives reflect JMC’s broader vision of combining environmental conservation, public convenience and sustainable development.
