Nyoma witnesses aviation milestone as IAF aircraft achieves world record landing

Ladakh has witnessed a new chapter in aviation history with an Indian Air Force IL-76MD transport aircraft successfully landing at Nyoma at 13,629 feet, setting a world record for the highest-altitude landing ever achieved by this aircraft.

The historic landing marks a significant boost to India’s strategic airlift capabilities, showcasing the operational potential of the heavy-lift aircraft and the professionalism of the IAF crew in challenging high-altitude conditions.

In a post on X on Saturday, the IAF wrote; “13,629 FEET. A NEW HEIGHT IN AVIATION HISTORY”.

“An Indian Air Force IL-76MD has scripted history with a successful landing at Nyoma, marking the highest-altitude landing ever achieved by the aircraft anywhere in the world.

A remarkable demonstration of the aircraft’s enduring capability, backed by the exceptional skill, precision, and professionalism of its crew”.

“A milestone that reinforces India’s strategic airlift capability. Pushing boundaries. Redefining limits. Making history”.

In a giant strategic leap in January 2024, a C-130J Super Hercules aircraft of the Indian Air Force landed at the high altitude Kargil airstrip near the Line of Control (LOC) in the night for the first time.

The IAF C-130 J aircraft carried out a night landing employing terrain masking enroute, the exercise also dovetailed a training mission of the Garuds.”

The night landing of the tactical lift aircraft with the elite Garud Commandos on board at the Kargil airstrip demonstrates the IAF’s operational capabilities in the strategically crucial sector.

Located amid the challenging Himalayan terrain, the Kargil airstrip is located at an altitude of around 10,500 feet. The Kargil airstrip poses operational challenges for pilots. Negotiating the high altitude, coupled with unpredictable weather patterns and formidable winds, requires pilots to exhibit exceptional precision and skill during the landing process.

The IAF had some time ago also landed its aircraft at the world’s highest airstrip, Daulat Beg Oldi, close to the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China at an altitude of 16,700 feet.
