After 2020 when the Hindu pilgrimage of Amarnath Yatra was suspended due to Covid, highly placed sources have informed that the yatra may be suspended this year as well.

“Due to the spread of a deadly strain of Covid in different states of the country, the government is not in a mood to take any risks and are planning to announce suspension of Amarnath Yatra this year also” said sources.

However the live telecast of traditional ‘Aarti’ from the holy cave will be allowed so that devotees can watch it while sitting at their homes.

The proposal to travel by helicopter has also been rejected for the time being as it is out of reach of the common people.

This year, the Shrine Board had decided to start the Amarnath Yatra from June 28. This time the option of starting helicopter service from Srinagar itself was being explored and tenders in this regard had been invited for the same.

The government had invited criticism by allowing Kumbh mela that became a cause of spread of Covid infections in different parts of the country.
