The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) conducted raids at various locations in Jammu and Kashmir related to arms licenses racket recently.

Raids and searches were conducted at around 40 locations in connection with allegedly granting of arms licenses to people who are not eligible.

This is considered to be India’s biggest arms license scam because as per agency over 2.78 lakh illegal gun licenses have been issued by district magistrates.

The residence of IAS officer Shahid Iqbal Choudhary who has served as the deputy commissioner of Srinagar, Kathua, Udhampur and Reasi and is cureently posted as secretary, tribal affairs, and chief executive officer of the J&K Youth Mission was also raided.

The Rajasthan ATS had unearthed the scandal in 2017 after they found criminals with licensed weapons issued by bureaucrats in J&K. It was also found by ATS that over 3,000 licenses were given in the name of Army personnel based on fake documents. The then J&K Governor N N Vohra had handed over the matter to the CBI.
