Atleast 15 pilgrims from UP killed, several injured as tourist bus plunged into gorge near Akhnoor

Atleast 15 pilgrims were killed and nearly 30 injured today when a tourist bus in which they were travelling rolled into a 150 ft deep gorge near Chowki Chora in Akhnoor of the Jammu district.

The bus was carrying passengers from Hathras in Uttar Pradesh when it skidded off the road near Tanda in Akhnoor.

Injured persons said that driver of the ill fated bus lost control over the speeding vehicle and it plunged into the gorge. The pilgrims were travelling towards the Shiv Khori shrine in the Reasi district.

Army personnel and Police were engaged in the rescue operations.

The injured were rushed to the government hospital at Akhnoor from where they were referred to the GMC at Jammu for treatment.

Transport Commissioner Rajinder Singh Tara reached the accident spot. He said that it appeared that the driver lost control over the vehicle resulting in the accident.

President of India Droupadi Murmu wrote on X; “Pained beyond words to learn about the loss of lives in a bus accident in Akhnoor near Jammu. My deepest condolences to the bereaved families. I wish speedy recovery of the injured.”

J&K Lt Governor Manoj Sinha said that the administration is providing all possible assistance to the bereaved families and is also extending medical facilities to those who have been injured.
