Congress leader opposes ‘one Nation, one Election’ proposal as impractical for India

Srinagar : – Congress general secretary Ghulam Ahmad Mir strongly criticized the ‘One nation, one election’ proposal today, stating that such a system would be impossible to implement in a country as large and diverse as India.Speaking to reporters in South Kashmir, Mir’s comments came in response to the Union Cabinet’s recent approval of a constitutional amendment bill aimed at conducting simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.

“This is not a small country, this is a huge country which is democratic,” Mir emphasized. He expressed skepticism about the feasibility of synchronizing elections across all levels of government, from Parliament to local municipalities and panchayats. The Congress leader, who represents Dooru in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, suggested that the proposal might be a diversionary tactic by the government.

“They bring up debates like these to hide from their basic responsibilities of providing employment opportunities to the youth, taking the country forward, and others,” he stated.Mir argued that India has not yet reached the level of advancement necessary to conduct simultaneous elections across all governmental tiers.

The proposal will be subject to parliamentary debate, where all parties will have the opportunity to present their viewpoints. His statements follow the Union Cabinet’s decision on Thursday, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government approved the constitutional amendment bill to implement the simultaneous election concept.
