The Dalai Lama on Sunday offered special prayers for victims of the recent flash floods in the Tibet-Nepal region that has claimed hundreds of lives and many more were reported missing.

The flash flood in the Tibet-Nepal border region—particularly in Kyirong on the Tibetan side and in the Rasuwa area of Nepal—have caused great loss of life, suffering and destruction.

For the benefit of the deceased, those missing, and everyone affected, as well as their bereaved families, we will pray to Avalokiteshvara and recite the six syllable mantra.

May these prayers help and benefit all those affected by this tragedy, he said.

The 14th Dalai Lama, who is camping in Leh for about a month, offered prayers for victims of the calamity while attending a Long Life Offering Ceremony at the Shewatsel Teaching Ground in Leh, Ladakh. The ceremony was organised by the Ladakh Buddhist Association, Ladakh Gonpa Association, and the Tibetan Community of Ladakh.

The Dalai Lama spoke with deep concern about the devastating flash floods that struck Kyirong in Tibet and Nepal’s Rasuwa region on 26 August.

The disaster claimed lives and caused extensive destruction, leaving families and communities in deep distress. In the presence of Dalai Lama, members of the public recited the Avalokiteshvara mantra, offering prayers for those who lost their lives and for everyone affected by the tragedy.

He had earlier conveyed his sorrow in a condolence message issued on 27 August, praying for the deceased and expressing his heartfelt condolences and sympathy to the bereaved families and those affected by the disaster.
