Declining groundwater: JMC to revive old ponds across city

water harvesting in Jammu

Expressing deep concern over declining groundwater levels and the gradual disappearance of traditional water bodies,  the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) has launched a focused drive for the rejuvenation and restoration of old ponds across the city.

The initiative aims to revive natural water-holding systems, prevent their degradation, and strengthen urban water security. The present work is part of this broader vision.

Under this initiative, the project titled “Rejuvenation of Water Body (Pond) near Chenab College, Ward No. 55” has been successfully executed by JMC. The pond has been rejuvenated using bioremediation techniques, resulting in a marked improvement in water quality by breaking down organic pollutants and restoring the ecological balance of the water body.

A major achievement of the project is the curbing of encroachments. Through restoration and proper demarcation of the pond area, illegal dumping and unauthorized occupation of public land have been effectively stopped, thereby safeguarding the natural drainage system and preserving the integrity of the water body.

Highlighting the significance of the initiative, Commissioner, Jammu Municipal Corporation, Dr. Devansh Yadav stated that the rejuvenation of urban water bodies is a key priority of JMC’s environmental sustainability agenda. He emphasized that such projects not only help in groundwater recharge and water conservation but also restore the ecological and social value of neglected public assets. He further added that JMC is committed to scaling up similar interventions across the city to strengthen climate resilience and ensure long-term water security for future generations.

From a hydrological perspective, the rejuvenated pond now plays an important role in groundwater recharge, contributing to the improvement of the local water table. The restored water body facilitates natural rainwater percolation, reduces surface runoff, and supports long-term water sustainability—an essential requirement for urban areas facing increasing water stress.

Beyond environmental gains, the project has also enhanced urban aesthetics, public health, and ecological value, providing a cleaner and healthier environment for residents as well as the academic community of Chenab College. Restored ponds further support biodiversity and help improve the micro-climatic conditions of surrounding areas.

The Jammu Municipal Corporation remains committed to undertaking more such pond rejuvenation and restoration projects as part of its strategy for sustainable urban development and public welfare, reflecting its long-term vision to conserve natural resources and improve the overall quality of life for the citizens of Jammu.
