Freezing cold conditions continues in J&K, likely to snow on Dec 14, 15

Freezing cold conditions continue to prevail in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh as Srinagar recorded minimum temperature on Saturday at minus 3.6°C.

Moreover, valley will be under intense cold wave in coming week as weather office’s predicts coming western disturbance from the night of December 14 which may bring snow and rains.

As per meteorological department official, Qazigund, had a low of minus 3.7°C against minus 2.4°C on the previous night. Pahalgam recorded a low of minus 6.4°C against minus 5.9°C on previous night. Kokernag, in south Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 3.4°C against minus 1.4°C on previous night. Kupwara town in north Kashmir recorded a minimum of minus 4.3°C against minus 3.8°C on the previous night. Gulmarg, the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, witnessed a minimum of minus 5.5°C against minus 6.0°C on the previous night.

As per reports, Drass town of Ladakh had minus 18.0, Leh minus 14.6 and Kargil minus 10.6 degrees Celsius as the minimum. Jammu city had 6.7, Katra 7.2, Batote 4.4, Banihal 6.8 and Bhaderwah minus 0.1 degree Celsius as the minimum temperature.

The weather office modified its prediction of snow and rains in the union territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh next week. Director, meteorological department of J&K and Ladakh, Sonam Lotus said that the dry weather spell will break by the night of December 14.

“As of now, light snow and rain in the plains of J&K are most likely during the nights of December 14 and 15,” he said. He said that the higher reaches especially of North Kashmir may receive moderate snowfall during the above period.

He further said that light to moderate snow is also likely at places like Sonmarg-Drass axis, Panikhar-Padum and on other higher reaches of Kargil and Leh dist during the above period.

The weather is most likely to remain generally cloudy during December 14-16th in Ladakh.
