US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor wrapped up his 3-day visit to Srinagar and Ladakh on Friday after visiting the historical Thiksey Monastery near Leh. He spent time exploring its temples and learning about the region’s unique cultural and spiritual heritage.

The US Embassy in India said that Gor’s visit highlighted the growing U.S.-India partnership through meaningful dialogue and cultural engagement.

The US Embassy in a post on X wrote; “Ambassador Sergio Gor wrapped up a visit to Srinagar and Leh this week, highlighting the growing U.S.-India partnership through meaningful dialogue and cultural engagement. In Srinagar, Ambassador Gor met Chief Minister @OmarAbdullah to discuss strengthening bilateral ties and later visited Leh to experience Ladakh’s culture and traditions”.

According to a monk, the ambassador showed keen interest in Ladakh’s spiritual heritage and cultural traditions during his visit. The monk said the monastery team explained various aspects of the region’s Buddhist culture to him.

He spent around half an hour visiting the temples and learning about Ladakh’s culture and traditions.

Located on a hill in Thiksey, around 19 km from Leh, the monastery is one of the largest and most prominent monastic complexes in central Ladakh.

The monastery is noted for its architecture resemblance to the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet, and is the largest monastery in central Ladakh, notably containing a separate set of buildings for female renunciates that has been the source of significant recent building and reorganization.

The monastery is located at an altitude of 3,600 metres (11,800 ft) in the Indus Valley. It is a twelve-storey complex and houses many items of Buddhist art such as stupas, statues, thangkas, wall paintings and swords. One of the main points of interest is the Maitrey Temple installed to commemorate the visit of the 14th Dalai Lama to this monastery in 1970; it contains a 15-metre (49 ft) high statue of Maitreya, the largest such statue in Ladakh, covering two stories of the building.

Gor arrived in Leh on Thursday following engagements in Jammu and Kashmir, marking a visit by a senior US envoy to the strategically important frontier region amid India’s ongoing security concerns along its borders.
