Heavy to very heavy snow, rain expected in J&K

Fresh snowfall and rains are being continued in Jammu and Kashmir as light to moderate snowfall occurred in Kashmir and rain lashed the Jammu region on Wednesday.

MeT department official said that Kashmir is likely to receive heavy snowfall from January 7 to January 8. Official said that weather is likely to remain inclement on January 6 and 7 while weather is likely to improve from January 9 onwards.

The temperature recorded for Pahalgam minus 0.4 and Gulmarg minus 4.0 degrees Celsius as the minimum temperature.

Drass town of Ladakh had minus 8.9, Leh minus 5.6 and Kargil minus 0.2 as the night’s lowest temperature.

Jammu city had 11.6, Katra 9.7, Batote 2.1, Banihal minus 1.6 and Bhaderwah 3.2 as the minimum.

After Kashmir received fresh snowfall on Tuesday, the MeT dept issued an ‘orange alert’ as the present weather system of snowfall is expected to intensify in the Valley.

Also the weather advisory was issued earlier for snowfall in J&K till January 9.

Also many flights have been cancelled due to the bad weather, morning flights to and from Srinagar International airport were cancelled on Wednesday due to poor visibility. Officials informed that as soon as the visibility improves, flights operation will be resumed.

Due to cold weather conditions and rains travelers had been advised not to go through Srinagar-Jammu highway by traffic department. Srinagar-Leh highway was also closed due to heavy snowfall on the Zojila Pass.
