India celebrates 73rd Republic Day, parade to witness grand flypast by 75 aircraft

Nation is celebrating 73rd Republic Day with the annual parade at Delhi’s Rajpath and India is ready to showcase its military prowess and cultural diversity. This year highlight of the parade will be a fly past by 75 aircraft and helicopters. There will be cultural performances by 480 dancers selected through a nationwide Vande Bharatam dance competition. The National Cadet Corps’ ‘Shaheedon Ko Shat Shat Naman’ programme will be launched in this year’s celebration.

The parade started at 10:30 am at Rajpath, ahead of the event, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to India’s fallen soldiers at the National War Memorial. As per tradition, the national flag was unfurled followed by the National Anthem with a booming 21-gun salute, presented by Ceremonial Battery of 871 Field Regiment.

The Centre also announced the Padma awards on Tuesday. The President approved the conferment of 128 Padma awards this year, including two duo cases, in which the award is counted as one. The list comprises four Padma Vibhushan, 17 Padma Bhushan and 107 Padma Shri awards. nSince the celebrations are undertaking in the Covid-19 pandemic, strict guidelines were issued for the occasion. Only fully vaccinated adults and single-dose vaccinated children of 15 and above are allowed to attend the parade at Rajpath.

Due to the pandemic, there will be no foreign contingent this year. People were asked to register on the MyGov portal to watch the live event online. They will also be able to vote for the best marching contingent and tableau in the popular choice category.
