Is Jammu heading towards severe water crisis?

Last Updated on June 10, 2022 at 4:04 pm

Several parts of Jammu, its suburbs and many rural areas of erstwhile Doda district are witnessing water shortage. Amid the rising mercury level people of Jammu are facing severe water shortage.

Alarm bells have rung in many areas of Jammu including old Janipur, Janipur Colony, Shant Nagar, High Court road area Bhawani Nagar, Anand Nagar Bohri and Bahu Fort falling in Ward Numbers 34, 35, 36, 41 and 47 of Jammu Municipality but administration is not taking any action towards this, reportedly.

Many residents allegedly said that they have taken the matter to higher ups even but no step is being taken to resolve their issues. Also residents informed that they have to purchase water through tankers at higher rates which is very hard for them to pay from their pockets.

The residents said that government has made tall claims of providing safe drinking water to all people by 2024 but the same seems to be distant dream in J&K as even the city areas are facing the water scarcity and no attention has been paid for years together to augment the water supply schemes constructed decades back.

Mayor JMC, Chander Mohan Gupta told Excelsior that major problem is because of Sithli and it has not been resolved earlier and added that JMC has taken steps to augment the Sithli plant and solar panels are being installed there but it will take some time and the problem will be solved.

The problem took worst turn after the City PHE Divisions were handed over to Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) last year as the Civic Body despite making tall claims of turning Jammu into a Smart City by giving it a complete change is even unable to supply the drinking water to the people despite charging the water tariff from the public.
