For the safety of people along the International Border and Line of Control with Pakistan around 8500 bunkers in five districts of Jammu province are ready for use.

For the Phase-2, Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) will be asked for sanctioning 15000 more individual and community bunkers.

As per reports, 8500 bunkers are ready to use out of 9905 bunkers which have 8444 individual bunkers and 1461 community bunkers and rest of the bunkers are undergoing construction in Kathua, Samba, Jammu, Rajouri and Poonch districts of Jammu region.

In order to protect people from firing and shelling these bunkers have been constructed between 0 to 3 kilometers from the International Border in Jammu, Samba and Kathua districts and Line of Control in Rajouri and Poonch districts.

Deputy Commissioners of these five districts have been directed to speed up the work of bunkers and complete all the formalities and issues coming in way of the construction of bunkers. They have also been asked to hold regular meetings with the executing agencies to assess the progress and give reports to the Home Department.

The issues coming in way of construction of bunkers reportedly are that some places the State land is not available and villagers are not giving their consent for the construction of bunkers on their land, some bunkers have been left by executing agencies due to price and rate issues.

Home Department has directed the Deputy Commissioners to ensure that all the issues are resolved quickly. Proposal has been put forward for construction of around 15000 more community and individual bunkers and Ministry of Home Affairs will be formally approached by the Home Department shortly after the approval of the Administrative Council headed by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha.
