Swstik Sharma, an eighth-grade student from PM Shri Kendriya Vidyalaya, Sunjwan Military Station, Jammu, has brought immense pride to the city by excelling in the inaugural National Meteorological Olympiad. The prestigious competition, organized to commemorate 150 years of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), celebrated young talents across the nation in the field of meteorology.

Swstik secured the second position, distinguishing himself as one of three achievers from Jammu and Kashmir. He was felicitated by Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General of Meteorology, at a grand ceremony in New Delhi.

The Met-Olympiad was an initiative to inspire and educate young minds about weather sciences, climate change, and meteorology. It allowed students from classes 8, 9, and 11 to showcase their knowledge and engage in various scientific challenges. Winners from across states and union territories participated in a workshop and the IMD’s 150th Foundation Day celebrations, attended by notable dignitaries, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

At the event, Prime Minister Modi unveiled the “IMD Vision-2047” document, emphasizing weather resilience and climate change adaptation. Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh and Professor Celeste Saulo, Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization, graced the occasion, alongside international representatives from South Asia, the Middle East, and Southwest Asia.

Swstik’s parents, Dr. Gautam Sharma, a dental surgeon at the University of Jammu, and Dr. Meenakshi Sharma, Chief Medical Officer at ESIC Hospital, Bari Brahmana, expressed their joy and pride at his accomplishment.

This landmark event, jointly organized by IMD, the South Asian Meteorological Association (SAMA), and the Indian Meteorological Society (IMS), marks a significant step in fostering scientific curiosity among young learners while celebrating IMD’s remarkable legacy.
