J&K government plans to establish high security prison in Jammu

In a major decision, the administration of Jammu & Kashmir Union Territory has decided to establish a high-security prison in the Jammu division.

For this the J&K’s revenue department has issued a formal order transferring over 400 kanals of land situated at village Dhar Dharochan, tehsil Bhalwal, district Jammu in favour of the Prisons department for establishment of high security prison.

“… Sanction is hereby accorded to the transfer of State land measuring 204 kanal 16 marla bearing Khasra numbers 917/896, (43 kanal 07 marla), 596/2 (13 kanal 01 marla), 600 (93 kanal 12 marla), 601 (06 kanal 18 marla), 607 (09 kanal 12 marla), 606 (08 kanal 01 marla), 608 (25 kanal 01 marla) and 597 (05 kanal 04 marla) situated at village Dhar Dharochan, tehsil Bhalwal, district Jammu in favour of Prisons department, J&K for establishment of a high security prison,” reads an order issued by the Principal Secretary, Revenue Shaleen Kabra.

According to the order, the land shall be used only for the purpose for which the sanction of transfer has been accorded after obtaining all other permissions as may be required for its establishment from the competent authority.

Currently, there are 13 functional prisons which include two central jails, nine district jails, one special jail & one sub-jail.
