J&K Metro projects await centre’s approval; DPRs submitted for Jammu, Srinagar; Jammu Metro corridor planned from Bantalab to Bari- Brahmana

The Government of Jammu and Kashmir has informed that proposals for Metrolite/Light Metro projects in Jammu and Srinagar are currently under consideration with the Government of India, with detailed project reports (DPRs) already finalised and submitted for appraisal.

Replying to a question tabled by MLA Mohan Lal in the Assembly, the Housing and Urban Development Department said that comprehensive surveys, feasibility studies and DPR preparation have been completed through RITES Ltd for both cities.

For Jammu, the DPR includes alignment planning, traffic and ridership projections, estimating a daily ridership of around 2.84 lakh by 2035. The project also outlines cost estimates, land requirements—about 29.58 hectares permanent and 1.50 hectares temporary—along with environmental and financial assessments. The Economic Internal Rate of Return (EIRR) has been pegged at 18.92%.

In Srinagar, detailed topographical surveys, traffic studies, engineering feasibility, and financial and economic analyses have also been carried out, with alignment planning completed.

The government further clarified that the proposed metro corridor in Jammu is planned from Bantalab to Bari Brahmana, spanning 23 kilometres with 22 stations.

However, it stated that Akhnoor town has not been included in the proposed corridor, indicating that the project remains confined to the Jammu urban stretch for now.
