A member of proscribed terror outfit Mujahideen Gazwatul Hind who was allegedly planning a suicide attack was killed in Srinagar on Thursday.

Jammu and Kashmir police said that a terrorist was killed on Thursday who was planning a suicide attack amid rise in violence and heightened counter-insurgency operations in the region following a spate of targeted attacks on civilians.

“The militant killed in the Srinagar encounter was identified as Aamir Riyaz from Pulwama’s Khrew. He was affiliated with the Mujahideen Gazwatul Hind. He was assigned to carry out a ‘fidayeen’ attack,” Inspector General of Police (IGP) Vijay Kumar stated.

In a tweet quoting inspector general (Kashmir) Vijay Kumar, the police identified the terrorist as Amir Riyaz.

The terrorist killed in Srinagar was a relative of one of the accused in the February 2019 suicide attack in Pulwama’s Lethpora, in which 40 Central Reserve Police Force personnel lost their lives.

The encounter in Srinagar broke out on Thursday evening in the Hamdaniya Colony area of Bemina.

A high security was deployed in Srinagar after back-to-back targeted attacks on civilians that left 11 people dead last month. A police constable and a salesman were killed last week in separate attacks.
