The Jammu and Kashmir government has finally declared Kalij Pheasant as bird of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir whereas Hangul continues to remain as the UT animal.

An order has been issued by Department of Forest, Ecology and Environment after the approval of the Lieutenant Governor. The bird, which is also known as “Lophura Leucomelanos”, is widely found particularly in Mansar, Surinsar, Jasrota and Bhaderwah areas.

Erstwhile J&K state had the black-necked crane and Kashmir stag (Hangul) as its state bird and animal respectively.

After reorganization of J&K, Ladakh adopted black-necked crane as its UT bird.
