Landslides block Jammu-Srinagar at Udhampur; more than 2000 vehicles stranded

Vehicular traffic on the strategic Jammu-Srinagar highway has been halted due to a fresh landslide and shooting stones at Dewal in Udhampur. More than 1700 trucks and numerous passenger vehicles were stranded on the highway between Udhampur and Banihal.

The traffic police has announced that no vehicles from Jammu towards Srinagar, Doda, Ramban, Patnitop etc or vice versa shall be allowed until the road restoration work is completed. Commuters have been asked to avoid travelling on the road.

The traffic police said that the stranded vehicles were being cleared through the single carriage way while repairs to the bumpy road surface are underway.

Apprehension of further landslides and shooting stones has been expressed by the traffic police.
