Manoj Sinha new LG of J&K

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha today undertook a comprehensive review of the prevailing security situation in Jammu and Kashmir with top military and police officers in Srinagar.

Tensions had escalated in the Valley and parts of the Jammu region yesterday when groups of mourners allegedly engaged in violent incidents, prompting police to fire teargas shells to disperse the crowds and restore order.

The meeting was attended by Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GoC-in-C), Northern Command; Nalin Prabhat, DGP, J&K; Lieutenant General Prashant Srivastava, GoC 15 Corps and Major General Balbir Singh, MGGS, Northern Command.

Additional Director General of CRPF, Rajesh Kumar, later called on the Lt. Governor.

Strict restrictions remained imposed in Kashmir for the second consecutive day following massive protests across the valley against the killing of Khamenei.

While educational institutions were shut for two days and mobile internet speed controlled on Monday as precautionary measures, the authorities cancelled all movement of security force convoys in the valley on Tuesday as protests turned violent at some places. Education institutions will reopen tomorrow in all districts except Srinagar and Budgam.

At least 14 people, including six security personnel, were injured during protests that erupted yesterday in Jammu and Kashmir following the killing of Khamenei.

This is the first time since August 2019 that protests on such a large scale have taken place in Kashmir. The administration of the Kashmir division appealed to people to exercise restraint and adhere to advisories issued by the authorities.

The Kashmir zone police has appealed to people to maintain peace in view of the developments in middle east. “We respect the right of citizens to peacefully express through lawful means. However, incidents of rioting, stone-pelting, clashes & disruption of public order at some places are not acceptable”.

The Police has registered a case against some media outlets and individuals for allegedly circulating “fabricated and misleading” information with an intention to incite unrest and disturb public order in connection with the protests against the killing of Khamenei.

Srinagar police has taken serious cognisance of the deliberate circulation of false, fabricated and misleading information by certain news channels, media outlets, and individuals across electronic and social media platforms, a police spokesman said.

“These elements are systematically attempting to spread distorted narratives and unverified content with the clear intent to incite unrest, disturb Public order, and create disharmony in the society. Such malicious misinformation campaigns pose a grave threat to peace, security, and the integrity of the Nation. Acting firmly,  the Srinagar Police has registered FIR No. 01/2026 at the Cyber Police Station under relevant legal provisions. Several Profiles have been identified, and concerned individuals have been summoned to the Cyber Cell”, Police said.

The Police has warned that “Some prominent individuals are reportedly making attempts to provoke activities that may disturb peace and public order. All such actions are under close watch, and necessary measures are being taken”.
