Liquor ban in Jammu and Kashmir? Bill to be introduced in Assembly

Srinagar :In a landmark move for the prohibition, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) MLA from Kupwara, Fayaz Ahmad Mir, has submitted a Private Member’s Bill that seeks an entire liquor ban in Jammu and Kashmir.

The laws are likely to be introduced in the upcoming J&K Assembly budget session with a view to prohibiting all aspects of liquor trade and consumption in the Union Territory. The bill proposes the most comprehensive banning of the advertising, sale, purchase, consumption, and manufacturing of alcoholic beverages across the region.

Mir has expressed grave concern over the social impacts of alcohol, stressing that rising consumption constitutes a grave danger to society and warrants the most stringent legislative measures. The bill envisages strict enforcement by imposing heavy penalties, including both imprisonment and fines, for offenders found guilty of violating the prohibition laws.
