MBBS, BDS interns in J&K to get hiked monthly stipend of Rs 25,000
In a significant decision, the Jammu and Kashmir government on Wednesday doubled the monthly stipend of MBBS and BDS interns from Rs 12,300 to Rs 25,000.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced this in a post on X saying “In a significant decision, the Government of Jammu & Kashmir has formally notified the enhancement of the monthly stipend for MBBS/BDS interns, including Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs), from ₹12,300 to ₹25,000, effective October 1, 2026”.
“Recognising the vital contribution of young medical professionals to J&K’s healthcare system, the decision provides much-needed financial support while acknowledging their dedication and commitment to patient care”, he added.
The interns had observed a strike seeking enhancement of the stipend and CM Omar Abdullah and Health Minister Sakina Ittoo had assured them that their demand would be met soon.
“Sanction is hereby accorded to the enhancement of the monthly stipend payable to MBBS/BDS interns, including Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs), in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, from Rs 12,300 to Rs 25,000 per month, with effect from 01.10.2026,” an order issued by the Commissioner/Secretary to the Government, Health and Medical Education Department read.
However, on Tuesday, the interns resumed their strike, saying that despite the deadline having passed, the government has not fulfilled its assurance.
