Rail India Technical and Economic Service Limited (RITES) has prepared a detailed project report of Jammu and Srinagar Metro rail projects. The report has been sent to Jammu and Kashmir Metropolitan Region Development Authority which has further been sent to the government of India for approval.
As per reports, approval of the detailed project report is awaited from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India.
The cost for metro rail projects in Srinagar and Jammu is fixed to Rs. 10,559 crore.
Officials said that completion of the project is estimated by 2024 once the concerned authorities approve the project. After the completion of the project Srinagar and Jammu will become two non-major cities in the country having a rapid transport network functional.
According to the project, the light rail transit system is planned to run 17 hours a day round the year in Jammu. In Srinagar it will run daily 17 hours during summers whereas in winters it will run for 14 hours daily. Officials informed that underground tunnels will not be built as it was not feasible but only elevated corridors will be built.
As per reports, Jammu light metro rail system will have 23 kilometre length and 22 stations between Bantalab and Bari Brahmana. Whereas, Srinagar light rail system will have 25 kilometre length which includes 12.5 kilometre length from Indira Nagar to HMT Junction and 12.5 Kilometre length from Hazuri Bagh to Osmanabad with 24 stations having 12 stations on each corridor. Metro coaches will be modern and lightweight.
This project will bring a positive impact on the economy.
