Severe cold wave grips Kashmir as Chillai-Kalan winter approaches

SRINAGAR: Kashmir is bracing for the onset of Chillai-Kalan, the 40-day harsh winter period, with temperatures plummeting across the region and the Meteorological Department forecasting challenging weather conditions. As the cold wave intensifies, Srinagar city experienced a bone-chilling minimum temperature of minus 5.3 degrees Celsius, marking a significant drop from the previous night’s minus 3.4 degrees Celsius.

The extreme cold has already begun to impact daily life, with water supply lines freezing in multiple areas of the valley. Popular tourist destinations are also feeling the winter’s bite, with Gulmarg recording a low of minus 4 degrees Celsius and Pahalgam experiencing temperatures as low as minus 6.8 degrees Celsius.

Konibal, a small hamlet near Pampore, emerged as the coldest location in the region, with temperatures plunging to a severe minus 8.5 degrees Celsius. Other areas like Qazigund, Kupwara, and Kokernag are also battling sub-zero temperatures, with readings ranging from minus 5.6 to minus 6 degrees Celsius.

Meteorological Department Director Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad has predicted generally dry and cloudy weather conditions for the next four days. Light snowfall is anticipated over higher reaches on the evening of December 21 or early morning of December 22, marking the official start of Chillai-Kalan. The department has issued an advisory warning travelers about potential challenges, including sub-freezing temperatures and icy road conditions on important passes and higher reaches.

Tourists, travelers, and local residents are advised to stay informed about weather conditions and follow administration and traffic advisories to ensure their safety during this severe winter spell.
