Covid infection cases in Jammu have increased around seven times in about a month. Data shows that Srinagar has highest 2,833 patients in the union territory.
Some regions in Jammu and Kashmir which were ‘coronavirus-free’ earlier are now registering new cases as second wave of COVID-19 infections is sweeping across the nation. Srinagar district witnessed 564 active cases on 19 March and this number increased to 2,833 on Monday. Jammu saw a seven-time increase from 211 to 1,582 cases in this time period.
Jammu and Kashmir has registered a total of 1.42 lakh COVID-19 cases by now. Out of these total cases, Kashmir has registered around 84,000 cases while remaining cases are contributed by Jammu. 2,042 people have also lost their lives to covid in J&K. 1.3 lakh patients have recovered from this deadly virus and there are around 9,300 active cases in the UT.
Jammu Chief Medical Officer J P Singh said that current situation is very worrisome and their department is taking every step possible to minimize effect of this pandemic. He said that the situation is very concerning if we compare this current situation to last year with a same time period. We had registered very low cases during this time last year.
He blamed people’s irresponsible behaviour for this sudden spike in number of cases. He assured that health department is better prepared than last year and they are taking every step possible to better deal with the situation.

Administration has declared many districts in J&K like Doda, Kishtwar and Samba to be ‘coronavirus free’ early this year as all infected people were recovered.
As covid cases increased suddenly, administration decided to close educational institutions from April 5 to April 18. Government has also imposed night curfew from 10 pm to 6 am in the urban areas of eight districts, including Jammu and Srinagar, since April 9. Curfew was also observed in Udhampur, Kathua, Baramulla, Budgam, Anantnag and Kupwara.
Officials said that covid has killed 480 people in Srinagar, Jammu (391), Baramulla (183), Budgam (123), Kupwara and Anantnag (98 each), Pulwama (92), Doda (64), Bandipora (63), Udhampur (58), Kulgam and Rajouri (56 each), Kathua (53), Ganderbal (49), Samba (43), Shopian (40), Poonch (26), Ramban (23), Kishtwar (22) and Reasi (16) by now.
