Under-construction bridge collapses in Ladakh, rescue operation underway

In an unfortunate incident, a section of the under-construction Shatse Takna bridge collapsed today. The bridge was being constructed near village Diskit in Nubra sub-division of Leh district. The under-construction bridge which was being launched could not withstand the strong gusty winds that swept Ladakh region in the evening today.

One labour working on the bridge has been rescued and is under medical attention. His condition is said to be stable. It is feared that another five to six persons are stuck under the fallen bridge, and the administration is making every effort to rescue them at the earliest.

The rescue operations are being supervised by the Sub Divisional Magistrate, Lakshya Singhal on spot. Operational support has been mobilised from the local 102 Brigade of the Army, project Vijayak of BRO as well as the Air Force Station Leh. District Administration Leh has rushed Assistant Commissioner Revenue Shabir Hussain to the spot.

Divisional Commissioner, Ladakh, Saugat Biswas, is monitoring the rescue operations closely and coordinating with all the agencies involved in the operation. Indian Air Force has been roped in for mobilising air evacuation of the rescued to Leh. The Director Health Services, Ladakh, has mobilised ambulances and other medical facilities on the spot.

Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, RK Mathur is closely monitoring the situation. He has asked to conduct an inquiry into the event to bring out the causes of the mishap. LG Mathur has assured every assistance to the affected persons in the accident, especially the labour working on the bridge construction.
