3 killed in Jammu floods, BSF helicopter rescues stranded people

Three people, including a woman and her daughter, were killed due to the torrential rains in the Jammu region today, while 44 persons trapped in a flooded village in Akhnoor were rescued by security forces.

The woman and her daughter were killed when their house collapsed due to rains in Kangri village of Sunderbani in Rajouri district early this morning. Bodies of the deceased were recovered from the debris and shifted to hospital for postmortem.

A truck driver, Sham Lal, was killed when his vehicle was washed away in an overflowing nalla at Bantalab here.

As many as 44 men, women and children trapped in the Fattu Kotli village of Garkhal in Akhnoor due to overflowing Chenab were rescued by BSF in a helicopter. SDRF and police teams also joined the rescue operation.

Men of J&K Police in Gool, Ramban, rescued a family of 11 members including children trapped in a house.

The Jammu-Srinagar highway and several other district roads remained shut due to landslides.

Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Anshul Garg said that people have been evacuated from nine villages of south Kashmir.

Jammu recorded a significant rainfall of 81 mm rain between 8.30 am yesterday till 5.30 am today. Reasi had the highest rainfall of 203 mm followed by 193 mm in Katra,157 mm in Batote and 114 mm in Doda.

All schools, colleges and universities have also suspended class work and all examinations owing to inclement weather for the day. The Board of School Education also announced the postponement of exams for classes 10 and 11 scheduled for 3 September.

As a precautionary measure, all vehicular and pedestrian movement on roads across District Doda has been strictly prohibited during night hours from 8 PM to 8 AM, with immediate effect.

Meanwhile, former MLC and Chief Spokesperson JKPCC Ravinder Sharma has expressed deep shock & grief over the death of mother & daughter in a house collapse in Village Kangri in Sunderbani today early morning and demanded immediate identification & shifting of families from vulnerable houses.

Expressing grief over causality of Sita Devi & her daughter Sonia, in Kangri house collapse of  Beripattan area in Sunderbani, he demanded immediate ex-gratia relief and free ration, shelter and other necessary material to the poor survivors of the family.
