JK Newsline impact: Jammu University shifts Academic Council meet from Poonch to Jammu

The University of Jammu has  shifted the venue of its upcoming Academic Council meeting from Poonch Campus to the main campus in Jammu, citing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal for austerity, reduced fuel consumption and greater use of online meetings amid the ongoing Iran crisis and global uncertainty.

According to an official circular issued by the University Registrar on Tuesday, the meeting scheduled for May 22, 2026 at 11 am will now be held at the Committee Room, Administration Block-II, University of Jammu, instead of the Poonch Campus as planned earlier.

The circular specifically states that the decision has been taken “in pursuance to the appeal made by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India with regard to reducing fuel consumption and conducting official meetings online.”

It further mentions that outstation members may attend the meeting through online mode and that the meeting link will be shared separately.

Earlier, JK Newsline had highlighted the contradiction between the Prime Minister’s appeal for austerity and the University’s decision to organize the Academic Council meeting in Poonch, which would have involved extensive travel by senior faculty members, officers and administrative staff from Jammu and other areas.

The report had pointed out that holding the meeting in a far-off campus would lead to avoidable expenditure on transport, logistics and fuel at a time when the Centre has been emphasizing conservation measures in view of the international situation arising from the Iran crisis.

The University’s revised decision is now being viewed as a course correction in line with the PM’s call for prudent use of public resources and promotion of virtual participation wherever possible.
