Sham district of Ladakh also imposes restrictions on river adventure activities

A day after Nubra clamped down on water-based adventure activities, the Sham district administration in Ladakh has followed suit after a foreign national lost her life in a rafting/kayaking mishap near Kilima on the Zanskar River, citing rising water levels and safety concerns.

Ordering the restrictions, the Deputy Commissioner of the newly created Sham district said “In view of the increasing in the water level of Indus River and the incidence of mishap reported in Zanskar River near Kilima while undertaking rafting / kayaking activities in which one foreign national unfortunately lost her life. The District Administration, Sham imposed restriction on all water-based adventure activities including rafting / kayaking activities. Therefore, no person, agency, adventure activity operator, organization or any other entity shall undertake adventure activity or such activities without written permission from the office of District Magistrate, Sham”.

The DC warned that “Any violation of this order shall be dealt within accordance with the applicable rules and laws against the person(s) or entity found responsibility. This order comes into force with immediate effect”.
