PDP’s amendment in Universities Act reversed, VCs term trimmed to three years

Five years after People’s Democratic Party (PDP) brought an amendment in the Kashmir and Jammu Universities Act, 1969 to extend the tenure of Vice Chancellors of the varsities to five years, government in a new amendment has trimmed the same back to three years.

In a notification issued by government of India, the tenure of Vice Chancellors of universities of Jammu and Kashmir has been reduced to three years.

The amendment reads, ‘For ―Jammu and Kashmir State‖ substitute ―Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir‖. for ―five years‖ substitute ―three years‖’.

In 2015 the PDP government brought amendments in the Kashmir and Jammu Universities Act, 1969 stating therein that in the sub-section (5) of section (12) of the Act, the words “three years” shall be substituted by the words “five years”.

The central government has brought amendment for state as well as cluster universities in the UT Jammu and Kashmir.

The central government has brought a series of changes in different acts for the UT of J&K in exercise of the powers conferred by section 96 of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019 (34 of 2019), and of all other powers enabling it in that behalf.

The amendments will also be implemented for the cluster universities of the UT.
