Katra, November 25: Protests against the proposed Rs 250 crore ropeway project near the Vaishno Devi shrine intensified on Monday, leading to violent clashes between demonstrators and the police. The protesters, primarily shopkeepers, pony, and palanquin operators, have been voicing concerns over the potential loss of livelihoods due to the project.
A 72-hour strike, initiated on November 22, was extended by 24 hours on Sunday as tensions escalated. Protesters staged marches and sit-ins in Katra town, demanding that authorities address their grievances regarding job security.The situation turned volatile when a CRPF vehicle attempted to navigate through the protest site. Some demonstrators reportedly turned violent, attacking the vehicle and pelting stones at police officers.
One officer sustained injuries during the confrontation.Local authorities confirmed reports of stone-pelting and described the protesters’ actions as aggressive.
Efforts are underway to engage with protest leaders and de-escalate the situation through dialogue.
