The Central Government is finalizing Rs 50,000 crore worth package for the Union Territory. It will be announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi soon for development of Ladakh.

Sources said that this package will be released for ensuring all-round development of the Union Territory. It is expected that this package will cover all major sectors in the Union Territory of Ladakh including construction of power projects, boosting solar energy, helipads, tourist circuits, education, health, road connectivity etc.

Sources said that the amount of this package is based on requirements of the Union Territory of Ladakh and will be used to solve difficulties faced by the people. The Central Government is also planning to strengthen the twin Autonomous Hill Development Councils of Leh and Kargil districts.

However, the time period in which this package can be used is still being figured out and it will be announced at the time of announcement of package. It is possible that it could be for five years but extendable in case of delay in construction of projects.

Other than power projects and solar energy, the package could also support tourism which hugely contributes to the local economy. This package could also fund some tourist circuits.

Sources said that both Leh and Kargil districts will get equal share of the package. The package will support road connectivity, development of tourism, hospitals and colleges in the UT.

Sources said that infrastructure projects will provide employment to many. The Union Territory of Ladakh was also promised a Central University in the Union Budget. Zanskar and Nobra belts of Ladakh could get funds for supporting education and health sectors.

People of Ladakh have been demanding a special package to boost infrastructure development in various sectors as the UT has no major resources on its own. There were also demands of 6th Schedule Status for Ladakh to protect culture, identity and heritage of the Union Territory. The Union Ministry of Home Affairs has agreed to provide 6th Schedule like status to Ladakh. The Central government had stated earlier that it will empower the Councils of Ladakh UT.
