The number of crimes in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir has increased by almost 10% in the past year, and the current scenario necessitates that the police develop effective policies and tactics for thwarting crimes and apprehending criminals. The Narcotics, Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPSA) charges have shown an even rising tendency, indicating that the drug mafia is still actively working to corrupt the next generation.
According to official statistics, 31,675 crimes under various heads of crime were reported in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir in 2021 as opposed to 28,936 cases in the previous year 2020, indicating an upward trend of 9.47 percent.
According to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s population projections for the year 2021, the crime rate stood at 235.68, up from 216.90 in the previous year.
The courts resolved 15624 cases in total, with 11285 cases concluding trial process. 8700 cases resulted in conviction, 2585 in acquittal or discharge, 3845 in compounded or withdrawn cases, and 494 in abated, quashed, or reprimanded cases, resulting in a total of 77.09 percent of convictions.
According to the data, assets worth Rs 36 crore was stolen in 2021, but only property worth Rs 14.79 crore was found, for a recovery ratio of 39.86. In terms of crimes against women, 3873 incidents were reported in 2021 as opposed to 3517 in 2020. In 2021, 1681 NDPS Act cases were registered, compared to 1222 in 2020, which indicates an upward trend.
537 terrorist-related incidents occurred in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir during 2021 compared to 595 during 2020, while Rs 3,17,100 worth of fake Indian currency notes (FICN) were found during 2021 as opposed to Rs 12,83,300 during the previous year.
When it comes to police station performance in 2021, Rajouri, Kathua, Udhampur, Nargota, and Surankot were the top five stations with the most cases registered. There were 765 cases reported to the Rajouri Police Station, 534 to Kathua, 490 to Udhampur, 478 to Nagrota, and 418 to Surankot. The top five police stations in terms of cases resolved are Rajouri (563), Udhampur (320), Mendhar (306), Surankot (282) and Kathua (273).
Anantnag (519), Kupwara (402), Srinagar (375), Budgam (372) and Handwara (364) were the top five police stations in the Kashmir Valley in terms of cases reported, while Anantnag, Kupwara, Pattan, Bijbehara and Shopian were the police stations with the highest case disposition rates.
