The construction of five government medical colleges in Jammu and Kashmir seems nowhere near completion despite crossing several deadlines. Detailed Project Report (DPRs) missed various important points hindering the completion work of these Government Medical Colleges.
As per reports, few years’ back medical college was sanctioned by Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare each in Kathua, Rajouri, Doda, Anantnag and Baramulla. For the infrastructure of these medical colleges funds of Rs 189 crore was provided. This step has been taken to provide better medical facilities and curb the problem of shortage of doctors.
But it seems to as if people of Jammu need to wait for these facilities as these medical colleges are yet not made functional. Several deadlines have been missed by the concerned agencies and officials. No doubt that Covid-19 pandemic affected the completion work but various loopholes in DPRs, incorporation have also resulted in delay.
Work on the medical colleges was initiated by just focusing on the civil works but during the period of execution the necessity of several mechanical components was felt and accordingly the project executing agencies were asked to make a provision for the same also.
Chief Secretary Dr Arun Kumar Mehta has told Health and Medical Education Department to get the work on all these five Medical Colleges completed within another few months so as to achieve the objective behind their sanction but the same depends on release of additional cost.
