Former Zimbabwe cricketer Christopher Mpofu leads anti-drug awareness campaign in Doda
Former Zimbabwe international fast bowler Christopher Mpofu, known for his pace, height and ability to extract bounce from wickets, urged students in Doda to stay away from drugs and adopt healthy lifestyles.
Mpofu, who represented Zimbabwe in international cricket after making his debut against England in 2004 and later played Test cricket for his country, was yesterday addressing an anti-drug awareness programme at Government PM Shri Higher Secondary School, Khellani.
The awareness programme was organised by the Young Star Cricket Club (YSCC) Doda in collaboration with the District Administration Doda and the Health Department as part of the ongoing Nasha Mukt Jammu & Kashmir Abhiyan. Mpofu is currently visiting Doda as the Brand Ambassador of the All India 16th Gufran Memorial T-20 Cricket Championship.
The programme was attended by Incharge Principal Mohd Ahsan, faculty members of the institution, officials of YSCC Doda including Dr Hamid Parray and General Secretary Faizan A. Tramboo, besides a large number of students.
Welcoming the guests, Mohd Ahsan expressed gratitude to Christopher Mpofu, YSCC Doda, the District Administration and the Health Department for organising the programme and providing students with an opportunity to interact with an international sporting personality.
Speakers on the occasion highlighted the need for collective efforts to combat drug abuse and promote healthy and responsible lifestyles among the youth.
Addressing the gathering, Mpofu shared experiences from his international cricket career and stressed the importance of discipline, hard work, perseverance and healthy living in achieving success. He said sports and education play a crucial role in shaping character and helping young people realise their potential.
Encouraging students to remain focused on constructive pursuits, the former cricketer urged them to become ambassadors of positive change and contribute towards building a drug-free society.
The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from students and staff members, who actively interacted with Mpofu and pledged support to the anti-drug campaign.
An anti-drug pledge was also administered to students, teachers and participants, reaffirming their commitment to remain vigilant against substance abuse and support the vision of a Nasha Mukt Jammu & Kashmir.
The proceedings were conducted by Dr Abrar Dev, who highlighted the importance of community participation in tackling the menace of drug addiction.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks and a renewed resolve among all stakeholders to continue spreading awareness about the harmful effects of drugs and promoting a healthy, vibrant and drug-free society.
