Ghulam Nabi Azad attends Congress meeting, calls for internal unity

Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad joined an important meeting organised by the J&K unit of the party. Earlier, he had kept himself away from party activities after being neglected for Rajya Sabha nominations.

In the meeting, the former chief minister of J&K emphasised that the party should advance collectively leaving behind any differences among themselves.  Azad told his party colleagues that they need to ignore internal differences and move forward unitedly.

Earlier, Congress accepted Ghulam Ahmad Mir’s resignation as leader of Party’s Jammu and Kashmir unit. There were rumours that Azad and Mir don’t get along with each other. A new panel constituted by Rajni Patil, AICC i n-charge of Jammu & Kashmir, has leaders who are on friendly terms with Azad.

According to sources, Azad was offered the position of president of the Congress’ Jammu and Kashmir division but he declined citing health concerns.

The next party leader in Jammu and Kashmir is expected to be a close associate of Ghulam Nabi Azad. Reports claim that Waqar Rasool is the front-runner for the position. However, it’s also possible that someone else from Azad camp will be chosen for this position.

KC Venugopal, general secretary of the Congress, acknowledged that there were disagreements among the Jammu and Kashmir Congress leaders. He stated that despite differences, everyone will have to fight together.

Azad, a vociferous member of G-23, caused a stir in the political world in November and December of last year with his public gatherings in Jammu and Kashmir.

Elections at all levels are among the reforms that the G-23 members have been promoting. The party’s list of prospective Rajya Sabha candidates for the Congress did not include either Ghulam Nabi Azad or party leader Anand Sharma. Prior to his retirement last year, Azad served as the opposition’s leader in the Upper House of Parliament.
