IDA workshop in Jammu focuses on safe dental practices, emergency care

The Indian Dental Association (IDA), Jammu Branch, successfully conducted a one-day Continuing Dental Education (CDE) program and hands-on workshop on “Pain Management and Medical Emergencies in Dental Practice”, informed Dr Anshu Gupta, convener CDE. The event saw enthusiastic participation from over 65 dental practitioners, specialists, and interns from across the region. It was organized in association with Septodont and supported by Colgate and Faith Innovations.

The session was led by noted oral surgeon Dr. Vimal Kalia, who brought extensive clinical and academic experience to the program. Having previously headed several dental colleges in Punjab and Haryana and currently running a private practice in Haryana, Dr. Kalia delivered an engaging and practical lecture. He focused on effective pain management strategies and the importance of being well-prepared to handle medical emergencies in dental settings.

Dr. Nipun Gupta, President, IDA Jammu, highlighted that the CDE reinforced the critical need for emergency preparedness in dental clinics. He noted that with increasingly complex patient needs and rising expectations for pain-free treatment, dentists must stay updated on pharmacological advances and evidence-based protocols to ensure safe and effective care.

Dr. Bhupinder Singh, President of the J&K Dental Council, attended the event as the Guest of Honour. 

Dr Gautam Sharma, Dental Surgeon, University of Jammu, was the observer, J&K Dental Council, for the event.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Vibha Raina, Secretary of IDA Jammu, emphasized the growing importance of pain management in modern dentistry. 

Dr Himja Mengi, Vice-President of the association, remarked that the program was particularly valuable in strengthening clinical decision-making, risk assessment, and the development of robust emergency protocols—ultimately contributing to a safer clinical environment.

Dr Abhimanyu Rohmetra, editor IDA, informed that during the session, Dr. Kalia discussed the identification and management of medical emergencies such as syncope, allergic reactions, and cardiac events. He stressed that timely intervention can be life-saving and shared real-life case examples to provide participants with practical, actionable insights.

Participants widely appreciated the depth and relevance of the session, noting that it significantly enhanced their confidence in handling complex and emergency situations.

Dr Aayush Sharma, treasurer, said that the event also included the felicitation of Aryan Dang and Sheeba Roohi, toppers of the BDS final professional examination at the University of Jammu, who scored 1167 and 1154 marks respectively out of 1600.

A hands-on workshop conducted by Septodont provided participants with practical training in the technique of loading and administering local anaesthesia, especially, articaine.

Monish Wattal, Area Sales Manager, along with Team Faith Innovations, New Delhi, showcased advanced dental products, including Single Tooth Anesthesia systems, Conscious Sedation solutions, and Stericyn HOCL-based oral healthcare products. These innovations drew considerable interest for their clinical applications.

Sumeet Gandotra from Colgate also presented a range of products to the attendees.

Dr Pankaj Bhagat, joint secretary, reaffirmed the commitment of IDA Jammu to continuous professional development and encouraged dental professionals to actively participate in such educational initiatives. The association stressed that ongoing learning is essential in today’s evolving healthcare landscape to maintain the highest  standards of patient care and safety.

Dr Ambreen Choudhary compered the event while Dr Payal was instrumental in planning and execution of the CDE.
