Know all about J&K’s Banihal Qazigund tunnel to be inaugurated by PM Modi

Jammu and Kashmir is all set to welcome Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday. PM Modi will visit J&K to participate in celebration of National Panchayati Raj Day. During his visit to J&K various developmental initiatives will be launched by PM.

Banihal Qazigund Road Tunnel, built over the cost of Rs. 3100 crore is one of the projects that is set to be inaugurated by the PM Modi during his visit to J&K. The 8.45 Km long tunnel would reduce the road distance between Banihal and Qazigund by 16 km, and cuts journey time by around one and a half hours. It is an all-weather transportation route as it features state-of-the-art twin tubes, exhaust system and several other features. The main aim behind this project was to facilitate an all-weather route for the traffic in the Union Territory, which use to get obstructed due to snowfall and landslides in the winters. It is built 5800 feet above sea level and tunnel will replace Jawahar Tunnel as an all-weather option for people travelling between Jammu and Srinagar. There is also a corridor between the two tubes after every 500 metres which has been built for use in case of any emergency.

Besides, PM Modi will also lay the foundation stone of three road packages of the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway, being built at a cost of over Rs. 7500 crore. He will also inaugurate a 500 KW solar power plant at Palli, which will make it the country’s first panchayat to become carbon neutral.
