Old Jammu-Sialkot road among four roads announced as national highway in Jammu

In a significant decision, the Union Ministry of Road Transport and National Highways headed by BJP veteran Nitin Gadkari is said to have decided to announce four more National Highways in Jammu division which will include Old Jammu-Sialkot road, presently comprising stretches of Tawi bridge-Jammu Airport-Miran Sahib-R S Pura up to lndo-Pak International Border.

Other three roads chosen from the region will include the road stretches connecting NH-44 with NH-244 passing through Kathua and Doda districts; road stretches connecting NH-154A with NH-244 passing through Doda district of Jammu region Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh and Dayalachak to Basohli in Kathua district of Jammu.

The groundwork has already been started by the J&K Public Works (R&B) Department.

One of the four highways will start from Tawi bridge and will pass through Jammu Airport, Miran Sahib, RS Pura and end right up to Indo-Pak Border which is also called as Old Jammu-Sialkot road and is declared as the National Highway under Highway Ministry’s prestigious Bharatmala project, reportedly.

It will provide a major help to the Armed Forces especially beyond Satwari and will also increase border tourism in Suchetgarh.

The Chief Engineer has to fill up formats for the roads viz., Kathua-Basohli-Bani-Bhaderwah-Doda (connecting NH-44 with NH-244); Doda-Bhaderwah-Chamba (Himachal) connecting NH-154A with NH-244; Dayalachak-Challan-Billawar-Manpur-Basohli (BRT of Bharatmala) and Tawi Bridge-Jammu Airport-Miran Sahib-R S Pura up to lndo-Pak border (Old Jammu – Sialkot Road) under BRT of Bharatmala.

According to officials, under Bharatmala, estimated cost of Rs 6,92,324 crore has been approved including other ongoing schemes, the MoRTH is developing the road connectivity to border areas, development of coastal roads including road connectivity for non-major ports, improvement in the efficiency of national corridors, development of economic corridors, inter corridors and feeder routes along with integration with Sagarmala etc., under Bharatmala Pariyojana project.
