Power disruptions cast Srinagar outskirts into darkness as families rage against unpaid bills

Srinagar : People in Mir Mohalla and Wagay Mohalla in Zainakote, which is on the outskirts of Srinagar, have been in darkness for two months since the Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) cut off their power supply because of unpaid bills. The issue has especially hit economically backward families in these localities.

The extended power blackout led to protests on Friday as desperate residents, including women, men, and children, marched with placards, calling on the authorities to restore their electricity connections. The protests indicated the increased frustration among members of the affected community.Protesters complained of discriminatory treatment by the utility company, citing how economically stable homes are still supplied with power while poor families are left in the dark.

The unequal treatment has apparently fueled tensions among community dwellers, with residents complaining that electricity access should not solely be based on economic ability. The families impacted have made dire appeals to the administration for intervention, highlighting the special hardship of living through power outages in the winter. They are urging a more sympathetic solution and an end to fair access to electricity for all members of the community, irrespective of economic status.
