An animal welfare activist criticized the Jammu Municipal Corporation for deaths of at least nine cows at the shelter managed by the civic body due to alleged starvation.

Activist Gauri Maulekhi in a tweet said “JMC is a death trap where street cows are starved to death. Today saw 9 dead cows and 232 critically malnutritioned cows&calves. Mayor Rajinder Sharma ji, the workers claim that no budget for fodder is allocated. Please take immediate steps”.

Her tweet prompted the Commissioner of JMC, Rahul Yadav to clarify the stance of the civic body. “There is no shortage of feed and fooder in JMC Gaushala as claimed. Facility was created with the objective to provide shelter to the destituted/ stray & abandoned animals found within JMC limits. During transportation period for several days, they were poorly fed & maintained and given sedatives/ anesthetic injections, due to that they do not recover even after giving continuous treatment for days & providing proper feed & fodder” Yadav said.
