Desi girl of Bollywood and Hollywood’s Quantico star Priyanka Chopra last night announced the birth of her first child with husband musician Nick Jonas. 39-year-old Diva opted for surrogacy for first child, the sex of which is yet to be revealed by the couple. However, according to reports, the Jonas couple has welcomed a baby girl.

The couple, who tied knot in the year 2018, has refrained to talk much about the baby requesting privacy.

Announcing the parenthood, global star Priyanka Chopra took to Instagram to write, “We are overjoyed to confirm that we have welcomed a baby via surrogate. We respectfully ask for privacy during this special time as we focus on our family. Thank you so much.”

According to a report published in Daily Mail, a source has confirmed that the baby girl was born premature. It reveals that PC-Nick’s daughter was born 12 weeks before the time and is now kept under supervision at a Southern California Hospital. The child’s arrival was actually expected in the month of April and Priyanka Chopra had reportedly kept her schedule free during that time to enjoy parenthood.

With the arrival of the baby, the rumours about couple’s divorce have also come to rest. Recently the couple’s divorce rumours were all over the place after Priyanka had removed ‘Chopra Jonas’ from her name on social media account. Though Priyanka had later clarified the reason for change in her name. She said, “I don’t know! I wanted the username to match my Twitter, I guess. I just find it really amusing that everything becomes such a huge deal to people! It’s social media, guys. Just chill out!”

Priyanka and motherhood

Opting for surrogacy, Priyanka Chopra has become the latest Bollywood star to embrace motherhood through this method. Priyanka, who is 10 years older to her husband, went for surrogacy to have her first child.

Priyanka had recently commented about having  child in one of her interviews. She said that children are a big part of their (couple’s) desire for the future.

However the fans are curious about Priyanka’s career plans after the arrival of the baby. The star was asked about her career plans after having a child, where she said that she was okay slowing down her career for motherhood.

Though Priyanka Chopra has opted for surrogacy, an insider has confirmed that the star had no fertility issues.

What is surrogacy?

Having children through surrogacy is no more a bizarre as many Bollywood stars have recently got their children through this. But actually what surrogacy is and how surrogacy works?

Surrogacy is a process that has helped many people to experience parenthood. It is basically a type of pregnancy where a woman carries and gives birth to a baby for some couple. The women who are unable to themselves carry and give birth to a baby due to certain reasons opt for surrogacy. Infertility is not the only reason for surrogacy.

How surrogacy works?

A medical procedure through which an egg of a woman is fertilised with the sperm to form embryo is surrogacy. The surrogate mother’s egg is fertilised with the sperm of the donor and the embryo is placed in her uterus. The surrogate mother then carries and gives birth to a child.

Often, the procedure gives an option to the parents to opt for twins or a single child.

Types of surrogacy

There are two types of surrogacy, traditional and gestational.

When the egg of the surrogate mother is artificially inseminated with sperm of the father or the donor, it is called traditional method. In this method, since the egg of the surrogate mother is used to produce a chid, the surrogate mother is the biological mother of the child. The child when born is given to the legal parents.

When just the uterus of the surrogate mother is used to carry a child and thereafter birth, it is called a gestational method. In this technique, the egg of surrogate mother is not used. Often the legal parents give their egg and sperm. The egg of the mother is fertilised with father’s sperm and the embryo is placed inside surrogate mother’s uterus. Since in this technique surrogate mother’s egg is not used, therefore she has no biological connection with the child.

Surrogacy and Bollywood

Priyanka is not the first in the list of Bollywood stars to opt for surrogacy, though she is the latest one.

May it be movies like ‘Good News’ and ‘Mimi’ that introduced the idea of pregnancy through surrogacy or the Bollywood stars themselves, the technique is no more a bizarre in India.

Before Priyanka, it was Preity Zinta who went for surrogacy to become mother to twins. Preity along with her husband Gene Goodenough announced on social media the birth of their twins in November 2021 via surrogacy.

Earlier, Shilpa Shetty Kundra also announced the birth of her daughter through surrogacy. The actress who was already a mother of a son, welcomed her second child through surrogacy.

Back in 2017, Shah Rukh Khan also mentioned about his third child, Abram Khan who was born through surrogacy in 2013. Aamir Khan and his filmmaker-wife Kiran Rao had also announced the birth of their first-born child through surrogacy in the year 2011.

Karan Johar, Tushar Kapoor, Ekta Kapoor and Sunny Leone are others in the list who opted for surrogacy.

While few Bollywood celebs went for twins, others chose to have a single child through surrogacy.
