Terrorists using satellite phones, thermal imaging devices in J&K

Sign of Iridium satellite phones which were used by US-led allied forces in Afghanistan have been found in Kashmir valley.

Officials informed that fifteen signatures of Iridium satellite phones and Wi-Fi-enabled thermal imagery devices have been found in Kashmir. These devices helped terrorists escape security during the night time. Officials further informed that some of the signatures of Iridium satellite phones have been found in cyber space since February and added that earlier these were in North Kashmir and now there are some in South Kashmir also.

Officials informed that there is nothing to worry about as movement of these phones was being specially monitored and those using them would definitely be in custody soon.

As per reports, National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO) and the Defence Intelligence Agencies (DIA) will to get the information about the presence of these satellite phones in the Kashmir.

The officials said that signatures of thermal imaging devices which can be connected to Wi-Fi have also been found from some sites which may possibly have found its way into Kashmir from Afghanistan, is used by terrorists to find their way out search operations especially during night.

It is pertinent to mention that Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) first restricted the use of Iridium and Thuraya satellite phones and infrastructure, and in 2012 completely banned them the under the provisions of the Indian Telegraph Act.

Passengers importing satellite telephone as baggage are required to declare them to the Customs on arrival at immigration and customs checkpoints.
