Vaishno Devi stampede: LG announces additional Rs 5 lakh ex-gratia for families of deceased

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on announced an additional Rs 5 lakh ex-gratia to the next of kin who lost their lives in the stampede at Vaishno Devi shrine on Saturday and making the total compensation to Rs. 15 lakh now.

Earlier, a compensation of Rs 10 lakh was declared by Lieutenant Governor for the family of the victims. Now, the kin will receive compensation of a total of Rs 15 lakh.

On Saturday 12 people lost their lives and many were left injured in a stampede that took place at Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine.  As per reports, 16 were injured in the stampede at the Vaishno Devi shrine. Nine of the injured were discharged from the hospital. The stampede took place at gate number 3 near about 2.15 am. As per reports, an argument broke out which resulted in pushing of people and then a stampede occurred.

A high inquiry has been initiated by Jammu and Kashmir government. Also a three-member panel has been set up to investigate about the tragic incident that took place and has been directed to submit the report within a week. The committee is headed by the principal secretary (home), and also consists of Jammu Divisional Commissioner Raghav Langer and Additional Director General of Police, Jammu, Mukesh Singh.

The order issued by General Administration Department read that the Committee shall study in detail the reasons behind the incident (stampede) and point out the lapses and fix the responsibility thereof.

Meanwhile, security has been tightened to regulate and manage the crowds and cops are managing the crowd for a hassle free pilgrimage.
