Leh becomes hub of faith and culture as Sindhu Kumbh begins

The banks of the sacred Sindhu River came alive with chants, prayers, and vibrant cultural performances as the 30th Sindhu Darshan Yatra and the inaugural Pratham Sindhu Kumbh 2026 began at Sindhu Ghat in Leh on Tuesday.

Hundreds of devotees, spiritual leaders, diplomats, and visitors from across India and abroad gathered for the five-day festival celebrating spirituality, national unity, and Ladakh’s rich cultural heritage.

The 30th edition of the Sindhu Darshan Yatra and the inaugural Pratham Sindhu Kumbh 2026 being organised by the Sindhu Darshan Yatra Samiti, will continue until June 27, bringing together devotees, spiritual leaders, dignitaries, and visitors from across the country.

The inaugural ceremony was attended by the Union Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Smt. Nimuben Jayantibhai Bambhaniya, who joined the devotees in celebrating India’s rich spiritual and cultural heritage. The event is being organised under the theme “One India, Shreshtha Bharat”, reflecting the values of national unity, cultural diversity, and social harmony.

A grand Kalash Yatra, carrying sacred waters from different parts of the country, marked the beginning of the celebrations. Devotees ceremonially offered the holy waters to the sacred Sindhu River, symbolising national integration and the spiritual bond that unites people across regions, languages, and traditions.

Lieutenant Governor of UT Ladakh attended the Pratham Sindhu Kumbh, commemorating the 30th anniversary of the annual Sindhu Darshan, and highlighted the event as a unique opportunity to experience Ladakh’s rich culture, vibrant traditions, and spiritual heritage.

Addressing the gathering, the LG urged visitors to support the ban on single-use plastics and maintain cleanliness to preserve Ladakh’s pristine environment and the sanctity of the sacred Sindhu River.

Artists from Ladakh, Odisha, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Manipur, Gujarat, and Uttar Pradesh enthralled the audience with vibrant cultural performances, showcasing the rich diversity of India’s traditions and adding colour and grandeur to the celebrations.

The Pratham Sindhu Kumbh stands as a confluence of spirituality, culture, and community spirit, showcasing the timeless traditions and warm hospitality of Ladakh.

LG Saxena said that the Sindhu River, the cradle of the Indus Valley Civilization and a lifeline of ecology and livelihoods, symbolises India’s unity, heritage  and spirituality.

Since 1997, Sindhu Darshan has grown into a vibrant Mahakumbh, embodying Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat, envisioned by Hon’ble PM Shri Narendra Modi. Devotees merging waters from rivers across India with the Sindhu, reflect our diversity flowing into one national stream, alongside giving a call for environmental sustainability.

“I am confident that events like Sindhu Darshan, apart from positioning Ladakh as a hub of eco-spiritual tourism, would strengthen local economies, and enhance Ladakh’s global popularity as a land of peace and reflection”, he said.

 He urged visitors to preserve Ladakh’s fragile ecosystem by maintaining cleanliness and respecting the region’s environmental regulations, including the ban on single-use plastic.

Speaking on the occasion, Vijender Gupta said that the Sindhu Darshan Yatra continues to strengthen the emotional and cultural bond among the people of India and has grown into a significant national event over the years.

The programme was attended by the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, spiritual leaders, public representatives, and several distinguished guests, including former Chief Executive Councillor of LAHDC Leh Tashi Gyalson, His Eminence Palga Rinpoche, Vijender Gupta, Speaker of the Delhi Legislative Assembly, renowned spiritual leader Swami Avdheshanand Giri Ji Maharaj, Dr. Indresh Kumar, and other eminent personalities.
