As the installation of toll plazas is planned on roads built by Border Roads Organization (BRO), anger is simmering among Ladakhis who have expressed strong resentment against the move.

BRO has proposed at least six proposed locations for toll plazas on different roads constructed by BRO in the UT of Ladakh.

The Chainman/Chief Executive Councilor, LAHDC Leh, Adv Tashi Gyalson in a statement said “The Border Roads Organization (BRO) proposed to generate revenue by laying toll taxes out Of BRO roads/tunnels in Ladakh is completely uncalled for and not warranted. The roads connecting and within Ladakh are the lifeline for the people of Ladakh”.

He said these roads are constructed with an aim to strengthen the border regions and to provide just and reasonable support to the local population. “Many of these roads don’t come under national highways and are being constructed with local resources involved. Moreover, the existing national highways are not at par with the standards of other national highways in terms of infrastructure. Also, the existing national highways are significant for locals and have also local resources involved. Therefore we have a strong reservation on this issue and expect the Administration of UT Ladakh especially secretary, Transport Department to categorically raise an objection and also communicate the reservation, both the Hill Councils of Ladakh has. “

Even the CEC of LAHDC Kargil, Feroze Ahmed Khan has also expressed discontentment over the decision to install toll plazas. “This is not in the interest of the general public of Ladakh. It is earnestly requested to the UT Admin, especially Secretary Transport to take onboard all the stakeholders before issuance of any NOC.”.
